Location
Maison Puits is in south-west France, south of the city of Angoulême. It is in the south of the Charente département, in the valley of the River Dronne which forms the border with the beautiful Dordogne region.
It is set in its own grounds, at the very end of a rural lane, so it is very peaceful, quiet and private, with no passing vehicles.
Le Breuil
Le Breuil is a small hamlet inhabited by elderly French farming families. It is at the end of a lane running up the hillside, nestling by a wood which overlooks the River Dronne and its valley.
Aubeterre
However, it is only a couple of miles to the beautiful town of Aubeterre, where there are all the practical requirements of butcher, baker, small supermarket, bars and restaurants, but also a variety of interesting features and entertainments: the "Monolithic Church", cut back into the rock of the hillside, the puppet museum and theatre, the narrow streets and Sunday morning market.
Further Off
Maison Puits is well-placed for excursions to the city of Angoulême, home of the national Comics Museum; the Cognac region (and the wine-region of Bordeaux); the beautiful Dordogne; even the coast (an hour and a half's drive, but worth it).
In order to get the most out of your stay, we strongly advise that you buy a good, fairly detailed map of France, showing many of the smaller roads. One recommendation is the Michelin Motoring Atlas of France -1:200000. Please note that various stretches of motorway open up, and you should get the most up-to-date information possible to devise the best, or most direct route.
Nearest airport: Bergerac, 60km (40 miles)
